HMS Meon was a River-class frigate that served with the Royal Navy and Royal Canadian Navy in the Second World War. The vessel was used primarily as a convoy escort in the Battle of the Atlantic, but also took part in the Invasion of Normandy. After the war, the ship was converted to a headquarters vessel for amphibious operations and saw service in the Persian Gulf from 1952 to 1965, before being scrapped in 1966.
Service History
Completed 31 Dec 1943.
7 April 1944-22 April 1945: Loaned to RCN; in 9th Escort Group based at Londonderry .
24 April 1945: Commenced conversion at Southampton to a Landing ship Headquarters (Small). Entailed removal of anti-submarine equipment and installation of extra communications and accommodation.
December 1945: Conversion completed and raid up in Reserve at Harwich.
January 1946-March 1949: Living ship for Reserve Fleet personnel at Harwich.
1949-51: Reserve at Sheerness’
3 April 1951: Recommissioned to join Plymouth command for Combined Operations Training
1 May 1952: Transferred to Portsmouth command to join Amphibious Warfare Training Squadron.
24 July 52: Left Portsmouth to serve as the afloat H/Q of Amphibious Warfare Squadron (Gulf) for next 8 years.
December 1952: Returned to UK and entered long refit.
June 53: Coronation Review; and then another long refit.
1956: Led the LST Force for the Suez operation.
1960 – 1965: H/Q Ship of Captain, Amphibious Warfare Squadron. During this period, she refitted twice at Malta and also docked at Bombay and Karachi
7 July 65: Paid off at Portsmouth and placed on-disposal list.
14 May 66: Arrived Blyth to be broken up by Hughes Bolckow Ltd
